Title- The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/34
Author- Sue Townsend.
Year read- Jan 2012.
It took me little less than a day to read this book because I was utterly enthralled by it. It just made me laugh so much. Basically, it is the diary of an english boy, Adrian Mole who at the start of the book is aged thirteen and three quarters (though he does turn 14 while reading). How to describe Adrian Mole? Well bless him, I guess in some ways he is (though he disputes this) like every other teenager in the world which is why I guess it makes it such a funny read. He worries about spots, he's a hypochondirac to a large extent, he shows obsessive compulsive and marginally autistic traits. Certainly very clever, though I would have to say that he sets more by his own intelligence then the people around him seem to, and is oblivious to fairly obvious things which happen in his life (like the fact that his mother is having an affair with the next door neighbour). On the whole, I'd say the book is fantastic for a little bit of light relief, there is nothing sinister about it, it's hilariously funny. I can't fault it. He is a normal teenage boy in some respects, ruled by testosterone and sex and his feelings of lust for Pandora, he spends rather too much time measuring his "thing" and goes to his doctor when his voice breaks (at which point I was nearly crying with laughter), in other respects he is a little bit aside from society (though in the second one he does try to fit in more, and this demise fails too). I would suggest reading it to anyone, but especially if you just fancy something a bit light hearted that will make you smile then its a brilliant book.
Part which stands out most- (after having his tonsils removed) "My father brought me a family sized bad of crisps. He might just as well have brought me razor blades".
marks out of 10- 10/10 I can't actually find fault with it- well done Sue Townsend.
Love, tutti-frutti.
